eMATH October 2021 Newsletter

Hello cooler weather and (modestly) brighter colors!!! It’s full on autumn here in the Hudson Valley of New York. We are excited to see most schools back to a semblance of normality. At eMATHinstruction, we know teachers, students, and parents are all still facing lots of hurdles, not the least of which is making up for lost time from the last few years. We are ready again this month with many new additions to our courses that will help.

In our middle school courses this month we continue to add mid-unit quizzes, exit tickets, and Spanish language resources. In N-Gen Math 6, we’ve added these resources for Unit 4 (Negative Numbers). Teachers now have access to the exit tickets, mid-unit quiz, and Spanish language versions of the unit assessment and unit review. In N-Gen Math 7, we have added the same four resources for Unit 3 (Proportional Relationships) and for N-Gen Math 8 we have also added them for Unit 3 (Transformations).

For Common Core Algebra I this month we have some resources for Unit 3 (Functions). First, we have the Form C of the mid-unit quiz. We also have a practice set of problems on Average Rate of Change. This practice set gives students opportunities to calculate and interpret the average rate of change of a function, where functions are represented by equations, graphs, and tables.

In Common Core Geometry we also have resources for Unit 3 (Euclidean Triangle Proof). We have added Form C of the Unit 3 mid-unit quiz. As well, we have added a practice set of problems on proofs involving parallel lines. These proofs both use givens involving parallel lines and proofs where students must prove that lines are parallel. You can never have too many additional sets of proofs to practice with.

Common Core Algebra II add-ons this month include two mid-unit quizzes. First, we have the Form C quiz for Unit 4 (Exponential and Logarithmic Functions). We then bring you the Form C quiz for Unit 5 (Sequences and Series).

Our Algebra 2 with Trigonometry add-ons this month also include two mid-unit quizzes. First, we have the Form C quiz for Unit 4 (Radicals and the Quadratic Formula) and then the Form C quiz for Unit 5 (Complex Numbers). We hope that the extra assessments give teachers flexibility in how and when they give our tests and quizzes.

Early November will be coming up soon and that means the AMTNYS Fall conference. This year it will be a virtual conference. We are participating in Sponsor Learning Bursts segments on Thursday night from 7:05 to 8:00 p.m. I will be discussing some exciting new additions to our middle school curriculum in the first session, and then take our last two sessions to discuss our transition from Common Core aligned Algebra I to Next Generation aligned Algebra I. Join me at the sessions. Here’s a direct link:

AMTNYS Sponsor Learning Bursts

We’re going back into the recording studio soon to begin making the videos for N-Gen Math Algebra I. I’m looking forward to getting back in front of a camera and doing some math. Until next month, enjoy the fall season, the beautiful colors, and that last bit of warmth.

eMATH September 2021 Newsletter

Welcome back to school teachers, students, parents, and administrators (not necessarily in that order). Of course, some schools around the country have been back in session for over a month now, but many in the northeast, specifically those in New York City, have just restarted. Some of these schools are having in school classes for the first time in over a year. They have been busy preparing for this challenging year, as have we. We have an exciting new round of additions for September, so let’s get right to them.

At the middle school level, for our N-Gen Math 6, N-Gen Math 7, and N-Gen Math 8 courses we have posted Exit Tickets for Unit 2 of Math 7 and Math 8 and for Unit 3 of Math 6 (Unit 2 Exit Tickets for Math 6 were published last month). We also have created and posted mid-unit quizzes for Unit 2 of each of the middle school courses and have also posted the mid-unit quiz for Unit 3 in N-Gen Math 6. Finally, we also bring you a variety of Spanish language resources for our middle school courses. In each middle school course we have published the Spanish language version of the Unit 2 Review and the Unit 2 Assessment. These Spanish language assessments are direct translations of the original English language versions.

At the high school level, we begin with our new Common Core Algebra I additions. First we bring you a third form (Form C) of the Unit 2 (Linear Equations and Inequalities) mid-unit quiz. We also have posted an additional problem set on solving linear equations. In this addition, Solving Linear Equations – Extra Practice, we have created equations that requite a good deal of manipulation and many equations involving fractions and decimals.

In Common Core Geometry this month, we bring you the Unit 2 (Transformations, Rigid Motions, and Congruence) Form C mid-unit quiz. We also bring you a Unit 2 set of problems on isosceles triangles. We felt like students could use more practice with classic isosceles triangle problems involving base and vertex angles. Algebraic manipulation is stressed in this problem set.

For Common Core Algebra II, we have published the Unit 3 (Linear Functions, Equations, and Their Algebra) Form C mid-unit quiz. You can probably sense a theme here with the mid-unit quizzes. Additionally, we have also added a nice practice set of problems on piecewise linear functions. This problem set gives students practice graphing piecewise linear functions and determining equations of piecewise linear functions from their graphs.

Finally, in Algebra 2 with Trigonometry, we are adding two mid-unit quizzes. For Unit 2 (Linear Relations and Functions), we have added the first mid-unit quiz (Form A) for this unit. For Unit 3 (Quadratic Functions and Their Algebra), we have added the Form C mid-unit quiz.

Now that our Next Generation middle school curricula are created, we have turned our attention to creating our N-Gen Math Algebra I course. We hope to begin to record videos for this course in the coming months and will give an update on our progress for the course at the fall AMTNYS meeting. For now, all of us at eMATHinstruction want to wish the teachers, students, and administrators a good start to the school year and good health moving forward. Stay safe and stay sane.

eMATH August 2021 Newsletter

It is that time of the year again. Schools are reopening around the country. Teachers and students are enjoying their last few weeks of vacation before Labor Day weekend. Teachers are already actively setting up rooms, planning out their first few days, and generally getting themselves ready for what it likely to be another strange and stressful year. Here at eMATHinstruction, we are also getting ready and have just published our first round of add-ons for this year.

This year in our middle school courses we will be publishing a variety of different resources to help instruction and assessment. Each month we will be publishing Spanish language versions of our unit reviews and unit assessments. We will also be adding exit tickets for each unit as well as mid-unit quizzes. For this month, we have published Unit 1 quizzes and exit tickets as well as Unit 1 Spanish language resources for N-Gen Math 6, N-Gen Math 7, and N-Gen Math 8. Additionally, for N-Gen Math 6, we have also added the Unit 2 exit tickets.

In Common Core Algebra I this month, we have added a Form C of the mid-unit quiz for Unit 1 (The Building Blocks of Algebra). We also have posted a practice set of problems on translating English phrases to mathematical expressions. We know this is one of the more challenging skills for students and felt like some fluency practice on it was warranted.

For Common Core Geometry we have added a Form C of the mid-unit quiz for Unit 1 (Essential Geometric Tools and Concepts). We have also published a practice set of questions where students translate geometric information into algebraic equations. We felt like students could use more work with both geometric terminology and basic algebra. This fluency problem set will help with both.

In Common Core Algebra II, we have published both the Unit 1 (Algebraic Essentials Review) and Unit 2 (Functions as the Cornerstone of Algebra II) Form C mid-unit quizzes. This year we are concentrating on adding these additional forms of the mid-unit quizzes in each course as opposed to adding another form of the unit assessment.

Finally, in Algebra 2 with Trigonometry this month we have created a mid-unit quiz for Unit 1.

In other news, this fall we will begin to record videos for our new, N-Gen Math Algebra I course. The first draft of the text is now done and we are working on both the supporting materials and eventually the videos. We hope to be able to release a first version of the text in the early part of 2022. Keep in mind, New York State put off the implementation of the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards for yet another year, so Algebra I does not officially switch to the Next Generation standards until the 2023-2024 school year.

That’s it for now. All of us at eMATHinstruction want to wish students, teachers, and administrators a good and smooth start to the school year. We also wish to salute the continued courage of all of the teachers, administrators, and school board members out there that are navigating these very challenging times in order to keep our kids safe while giving them a high quality education.

eMATH March 2021 Newsletter

Spring is on the horizon and the ever-so-strange school year continues into its final chapters. As always, we want to recognize the hard work and dedication of all of the amazing teachers out there who are doing their best to educate our kids in ways that they never envisioned when becoming teachers. We also wanted to give a shoutout to all of the parents and students themselves who are working so hard to learn valuable math this year, even when likely seeing their teachers only a few times a week. It is our great hope that the 2021-2022 school year will return us to something much more familiar.

We’ve got many new resources for you this month. In our middle school courses this month, we have finished posting the resources for the year. First, we have published the Unit 11 and Unit 12 Assessments for N-Gen Math 6. For N-Gen Math 8, we have published the Unit 11 Assessment. The unit assessments for N-Gen Math 7 were completed last month. We have also added the remaining SMART Notebook files for all three N-Gen middle school courses. Next year we plan to add a variety of new resources for the N-Gen middle school series. These may include a second unit assessment for each unit, exit tickets for each lesson, mid-unit quizzes for lengthy units, and Spanish language editions of the lessons and homework sets. We’d love to hear suggestions from middle school teachers in the final months of this school year on what they would like to see added on.

In Common Core Algebra I this month, we have a nice practice set of problems for Unit 9 (Radicals and the Quadratic Formula). The practice set is entitled Additional Practice Solving Quadratic Equations. This collection of problems emphasizes every technique students have seen to solve quadratic equations including factoring, completing the square, using the quadratic formula, and solving equations graphically with and without technology. It’s a great problem set to review these techniques and see connections amongst them. Additionally, we’ve published the Spanish language versions of the Unit 10 (Statistics) assessments (Forms A, B, and C).

For Common Core Geometry this month we bring you add-ons for Unit 8 (Right Triangle Trigonometry). First, we have a set of mid-unit quizzes, both a Form A and a Form B version. We then bring you the Unit 8 Form D Assessment.

In Common Core Algebra II this month we have two additional practice sets of problems. First, in Unit 10 (Polynomial and Rational Functions), we bring you a worksheet on Polynomial Long Division practice. This is a great sheet of problems that gives students lots of extra practice with polynomial long division, both with and without remainders. We also bring you a Unit 11 (Circular Functions) worksheet on Solving Trigonometric Equations Graphically. Although solving trig equations is not an official part of Common Core Algebra II, we thought a worksheet on this technique was a great way to look at both solving equations graphically and graphing sinusoidal functions.

Finally, in Algebra 2 with Trigonometry this month we have three new assessments. First, we bring you the Unit 10 (Exponential and Logarithmic Functions) Form D Unit Assessment. We also bring you a set of mid-unit quizzes for Unit 11 (Probability).

As we look ahead to April, May, and June, eMATHinstruction is closely monitoring the high school testing situation in New York State. It looks like the U.S. Department of Education will force New York State to administer, at the bare minimum, the Common Core aligned Algebra I Regents exam. It is our tentative plan to do at least one, if not multiple, YouTube Live review sessions in early June to help give kids a last look at the material on this exam. We will flesh out more details about the review sessions once we are certain the test will actually be given. For now, enjoy the warmer weather if it has come to you and enjoy the idea that spring is one the way!

eMATH February 2021 Newsletter

Congratulations goes out to all of the teachers and students who have made it past mid-winter. Given the frigid temperatures around the country just knowing it will be over soon is something to hang onto. Our thoughts go out to everyone in Texas and other southern areas that are having a particularly tough time. Here in the Northeast we’ve had more snow than we did last year for sure. We’ve had multiple Nor’easters and another one is on the way for later this week. Thankfully, the days are getting longer and the temperatures just a bit higher as we look towards March. We’ve been as busy as always here at eMATHinstruction. We’ve changed the way our Blog looks, created lots more add-ons for our courses, and continue to make progress on our next Next Generation aligned Algebra I course.

Our new additions to our N-Gen Math 6 through 8 courses this month are all about Unit 10. In all three courses we have published the SMART Notebook files for the various Unit 10’s and we have also published the Unit 10 Form A Assessment. That actually concludes the new material for the year in Math 7, although we may still add on some additional lessons for this course before the end of the year. In Math 6 and Math 8 we will publish the remaining unit assessments and SMART Notebook files in our March add-ons.

For Common Core Algebra I this month we continue to bring you more Spanish language resources. This month we published the Unit 9 Form A, B, and C Assessments in Spanish. We also bring you a Form A and Form B mid-unit quiz for Unit 8 (Quadratic Functions and Their Algebra).

In Common Core Geometry we have three new resources for Unit 7 (Dilations and Similarity). First, we bring you the Form A and Form B mid-unit quizzes. We also bring you the Form D Unit Assessment.

Our new resources for Common Core Algebra II this month include a couple mid-unit quizzes and an enrichment lesson. First, we have the Unit 10 (Polynomial and Rational Functions) mid-unit quiz, Form A and Form B. We also bring you an enrichment lesson for Unit 10 on Synthetic Division. We know this is a popular topic that many schools teach to their honors students in Algebra II. We believe this is a great lesson to use for that type of purpose.

Finally, in Algebra 2 with Trigonometry, this month we have the Unit 9 (Trigonometric Applications) Form D Assessment. We also bring you the Unit 10 (Exponential and Logarithmic Functions) mid-unit quiz, Form A and Form B.

In other news, we now have all of our Common Core Algebra I lessons and homework sets in Spanish for free use. We did have those originally only as a paid option but felt that we needed to make them freely available for students who might need to access them at home. We have also been busy on translating all of the middle school texts into Spanish and hope to make those files available by next fall as well as have workbook versions of them for sale. Our blog has a new look and more functionality. You now have a much greater ability to sort posts by various categories.

For now, take care and find hope in the spring that is surely just around the corner.
