Recently, I received an email from a math teacher who had been surfing the listservs. He found a list reportedly from NYSED about topics that will no longer be tested on the new Common Core Algebra II Regents exam (as opposed to the current Algebra 2 with Trigonometry exam). He pointed out that some of the topic on the list were in the Table of Contents for our new Common Core Algebra II text. When… Read more »

Common Core Algebra II Summer Reading
Posted onI don’t know about anyone else but my “last day” at work was yesterday, Thursday June 25th. Strange that my last day would be a Thursday, but, of course, that means that today, Friday June 26th, is the … FIRST DAY OF SUMMER VACATION!!!! It’s like the greatest and longest Saturday ever. Sorry about the all caps, but I slept from 11:00 last night until 8:00 this morning. I had been on a really long… Read more »
Common Core Algebra II Alignment Analysis and Table of Contents
Posted onHey All, Well, I’ve just finished the complete first draft of Common Core Algebra II and its answer key. I did a preliminary alignment analysis with the PARCC End of Year (EOY) standards. These are what NYSED is supposed to base its Regents exams on. I also adjusted due to NYSED’s recent standards clarifications and added 4 additional lessons (can you say reciprocal trigonometric functions?). I just updated the Table of Contents with these new… Read more »
TI Statistics Programs Updated for Common Core Algebra II
Posted onO.k. So, I’ve updated the statistics programs for the TI-83/84 that are needed to do the simulations for Unit #13 (Statistics) in the new Common Core Algebra II. Here are the programs and a description of what they do. Click on the link to download one and then use TI-Connect (and a cable) to get them onto your calculator. If you are unsure how to do this, click on the link below: Instructions for TI-Connect… Read more »
Common Core Algebra II – The First Six Units
Posted onSo, I’ve been doing a super quick initial round of editing on Common Core Algebra II. I’ve compiled the first six units into unit pdf files. For those schools who are considering using our curriculum for the first year of implementation (in New York State at least), I submit these for review. Of course, the HUGE caveat is that the lessons will likely be filled with typographical, grammatical and mathematical errors. Most of those will… Read more »
Trigonometry Resources by Jenn Sauer
Posted onJenn Sauer has given us some great Trigonometry resources, especially for the current Algebra 2 and Trigonometry course in New York State. She contributed a wonderful packet of lessons and a great YouTube channel that links to videos on the lessons (hey, I’ve heard of that before). Here’s the packet: Unit 6a Trigonometry Packet 2014 And here’s a link to her YouTube channel: Jenn Sauer Trigonometry
Common Core Algebra II Table of Contents – First Draft
Posted onO.k. So, here’s our official first draft Table of Contents. It has no page numbers on it. I’m not even close on that. It should give everyone a good sense for where I’m at and where I’m coming from. I am now at 103 lessons. I did a preliminary alignment analysis versus the PARCC EOY Standards and I think it came out well, especially on some of the newer topics. Honestly, sometimes the standards confuse… Read more »
Common Core Algebra II First Draft Done!
Posted onSo, I thought this would take me until at least March, but a lot of snow days and some fun statistics lessons at the end got me across the “finish” line. I finished the “last” Common Core Algebra II lesson yesterday with some bivariate data analysis (trig regression). I’m going to take some time today to get ready for winter storm Linus (why can’t we get Charlie Brown?). I’m also going to watch a certain… Read more »
Statistical Simulation – The Effect of the Treatment on Sample Means
Posted onMore than any other topic, I was most worried about writing lessons for the statistics standards in Common Core Algebra II. I’ve been a high school math teacher in New York now for 16 years. The extent I’ve taught stat has been the normal distribution in half-standard deviation increments (all you Integrated Course III teachers know what I’m saying). I taught college statistics over a decade ago at Syracuse University, but it’s been awhile. So… Read more »
It’s Coming – Common Core Algebra II
Posted onI’m getting there. Around 90% of the lessons and homework sets for the first draft have been written. I’m still projecting a mid-March completion of the first draft, at least to a point where I’m going to be putting it out there for the wider audience. Here’s our cover. Thanks to C. Michael Frey, our artist and founder of Frey Art and Design, visit his site to see more of his great work. Click on… Read more »
