Every eMATHinstruction lesson video now includes Spanish audio and Spanish captions, making it easier to support Spanish-speaking students and multilingual classrooms.
For many students, understanding a math concept depends on more than the calculations. Students also need to understand the language used to explain a concept, follow the steps in a problem, and make sense of mathematical vocabulary.
That can create an extra challenge for students who are learning math while also learning English.
To make eMATHinstruction more accessible to these students, Spanish audio and Spanish captions are now available on every eMATHinstruction lesson video for middle and high school.
Students can switch between English and Spanish whenever they need to, giving them another way to access the same instruction, examples, and explanations their classmates are using.
Math has a language of its own. Words like coefficient, equivalent, slope, denominator, and congruent can take time to learn even for students who speak English fluently. For multilingual kids, the challenge can become even greater when they are trying to understand a new mathematical idea and the language used to explain it at the same time.
Providing instruction in a student’s stronger language can give them another entry point into grasping the material.
A student might understand the concept but miss an important step because they are still working through the English explanation. Being able to watch that lesson in Spanish can help remove that barrier.
Spanish access can also give students more independence. They can choose Spanish when they need additional support, switch back to English as their confidence grows, or use both languages to reinforce their understanding.
And because students can change the settings themselves, teachers do not have to create a separate version of each lesson.
Switching a video to Spanish takes just a few clicks.
1. Open any eMATHinstruction lesson video.
2. Click the three dots in the bottom-left corner of the video.
3. Change the Captions and Audio settings to Spanish.
That’s it!
Students can make the change themselves on their own devices, so they can choose the language that works best for them during class, while studying, or reviewing a lesson at home.
Spanish captions can also be useful for students who want to hear the lesson in English while reading the explanation in Spanish, or vice versa. Kids can personalize the settings that best support their learning.
eMATHinstruction’s Math 6, Math 7, Math 8, and Algebra I materials include Spanish workbooks and Spanish lesson resources.
That gives students the opportunity to access more of the lesson in Spanish, from the instructional materials they use during class to the work they complete independently.
